Fall 2006 Schedule of Events
What is a Fraternity?
Fraternity - n.
1. a social society for men who are students at a college or university, with a name consisting of individually pronounced Greek letters.
2. a group of people with something in common, for example, being in the same job or sharing the same pastime
3. brotherly love, or feelings of friendship and mutual support between people
4. a group or society formed by people who share the same interests
Why join a fraternity?
ACADEMICS
The academic portion of your university career is one significant determinant in your future success. The primary purpose of the fraternity system is to encourage and develop high scholastic achievement among its members. Just over 50% of students in university end up graduating. However, if you belong to a fraternity, your chances of graduating increase to over 70%! Fraternity members help each other to succeed!
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Usually, the only way a person gets involved in a philanthropic event, is to do it with a group of people. On your resume, you need volunteer experience. The fraternity is an excellent way for you to donate your time for a good cause. Every Fraternity on this Campus is involved in Community Service.
ATHLETICS
Each fraternity participates in the numerous competitive sports in the Campus Recreation Intramural Leagues and in inter-fraternal sports like: Softball, Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Golf, Foosball, Soccer and Hockey.. It's difficult to get a group of people on your own to play team intramural sports, outdoor paintball, or to get a softball game together on a Sunday afternoon. Fraternities offer all of this along with the pride of sportsmanship, team spirit, and competition!
* AKL participates in every IFC sport, and consistently places high. Our most proud victories include Soccer Champions 1998-2000, Basketball Champions in 1996-1999, and Overall Greek Sports Champions 2002-2003.
LEADERSHIP
In the fraternity, you will be "in charge" of an event or a duty. Everyone in the fraternity is a leader, whether you're an officer, an executive, on a committee, or just a participant. You will learn by doing. You'll learn how to manage a budget, run effective meetings, speak in public, motivate others ... skills that will help you in university and throughout your life. These days it takes more than just a degree to get a good job - it takes leadership experience. 85% of the Fortune 500 Executives, 80% of US Presidents since 1900, & 100% of Apollo 11 Astronauts..... all joined a fraternity!!!
* AKL strives in Leadership within the Fraternity, as well as outside the Fraternity. Outside the Fraternity, we have members that are Student Government Executive Officers, Student Activities Executive Officers, Interfraternity Council Executive Officers, National Representatives, SOAR Leaders (Student Orientation Guides) Ambassadors for the University and many more.
BROTHERHOOD
Brotherhood is the foundation of the fraternity experience. Every man contributes to this aspect. Brotherhood combines the concept of individualism within the framework of mutual cooperation. As a fraternity brother you will form friendships unlike any found in other organizations. Brotherhood is not conformity. No fraternity is made up of me members who are exactly alike. By choosing to become a member of a fraternity, you will meet brothers who grow to become your closest friends, those who will cheer you on when you're successful and who will support you when the going gets tough.
* AKL has a tight Brotherhood, yet every member is diverse. We have the most diverse house on the campus. No member or new member will ever be discriminated against, and we thrive of learning from different backgrounds. Like our Mission Statement claims, "we are diverse men of Alethia Kai Logos."
NETWORKING
So, let's say you've graduated or are just looking for a summer job. Now what? In today's economy and job market, it's going to take more than looking at want-ads and job postings. You need to network with people. The fraternity is one of the best ways to do just that. Using the resources of fraternity members like alumni, you may find that job you're looking for - that head start in life, all because you joined a fraternity. What an investment!
* Our national office keeps current records of every member, and provides a private member side for every initiated member that allows for networking with other AKL Alumni across the entire nation (every chapter).
TRAVELING
Now assume you're planning a trip to another city in North America. You need a place to stay, but you don't want to spend too much money. Fraternity membership allows you to travel to other fellow chapter houses to meet brothers and have a place to stay for free! Sometimes, one chapter will get a bunch of guys together and plan a road trip and stay at several chapters along the way. And when you arrive, although you may have never met these brothers before, you have a fraternal bond, and you're more than just a guest in their home, you're instant friends.
* Our common bond between brothers is initiation, and every AKL has this common bond.
When Is Recruitment?
Recruitment is a year round process in which the Beta Psi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Lambda strives on seeking individuals sharing our same ideals and goals in life. In the Spring 2007, the Missouri State University campus will hold greek recruitment starting August 26th. On August 26th of recruitment, the session known as Formal Recruitment ,will be held in the Plaster Student Union from 5:00pm till 10:00pm. Formal Recruitment gives you an opportunity to meet members of each individual greek fraternity. On August 27th you will be given the opportunity to "tour" each greek fraternity house. On August 28th through September 1st of recruitment, the session known as Informal Recruitment, will be held at all fraternity houses. Informal Recruitment usually involves a bunch of Alpha Kappa Lambda's hanging out at our house playing basketball, bar-b-queuing, player washers, and having fun. It is your chance to stop by and give us the opportunity to meet you in our everyday life, and learn who we are and more of what we're about. We look forward to hearing from you, and hope to see you this fall. Please contact our President Jay Hahn or Recruitment Chair John Higdon at (417)8947379 if you have any questions or would like more information.
What Is The Cost of Being in a Fraternity?
Our members currently pay $65 a month for dues, and $245 for rent if they live in the chapter house. To many, $65 may seem a lot, but ask any member, and they will tell you it is worth more than that. By paying dues, we are not "buying our friends" as many people have said about fraternities, and we do not spend all of our money on parties. With this money, we pay to Nationals and the school to be recognize a school affiliated student organization. Those that live in the Chapter house do not have to pay for cable, utilities, trash, or phone as it is provided by the Fraternity.
